Just recently I have been asked by a several people “I’m new to comics what would you suggest to start on?” This question is so difficult to answer for any media really, books, movies, tv shows until you know what the person likes its really hard to suggest something. I usually try and ask them to find out what art styles they like to find an artist they might enjoy reading, the sorts of stories they want, whether they want a one off story line, a series or an entire event like the marvel events. I then try and offer them some impartial advice as I know some good starter comics. However one website/App that I have to recommend is comixology. This is cloud-based digital comics digital distribution platform that was bought by Amazon a few years ago and is the largest digital distributes of comics. All the major comic publishers use this including Marvel, DC and Dark-horse among others. The fact it was bought by Amazon means that anyone can log in to the website and app using their Amazon account. This means you don’t have to remember yet another password.

However the one of the main reasons I recommend this service to new comic readers is the library of free comics the shop holds. These free comics are released by the publishers to get you interested in a comic collection. They are usually issue #1 or #0 which are usually just previews of the upcoming event or series. But the fact they have thousands of free comics means you can download a few, read a few pages and if you’re interested you can either continue reading and get the entire series or bin and go to the next. This means you will be able to get a feel for the art work, type or writing and even the story lines you might like.

There are also many independent comic publishers that offer great story lines on this service. They usually offer different story lines that the main publishers won’t usually try. These story lines could be darker than the marvel storylines.

What I would suggest would be to try out some of the free comics and get a feel of what you might like, then have a browse for some more that are similar. Here are some links to the app and website
